How Much Room Do I Need for My New Home Theater?

How Much Room Do I Need for My New Home Theater?

There's nothing quite like walking into a movie theater, with the smell of hot, buttered popcorn and comfortable chairs — not to mention the oversized, larger-than-life video and sound that takes your breath away during an action sequence. The only thing better is creating a custom home theater room in your home! However, it can be challenging to see exactly how much room you'll need to create the perfect room that will allow you to enjoy a movie theater experience in the comfort of your own home. Here are some tips to get the measurements you need to get started.

Review Your Seating Needs

Are you creating an intimate setting for only a few individuals, or do you want to build a viewing room that will seat extended family and friends? Measuring your space should also include additional room for side tables for concessions and space to move between the seats. Measure your seating area by using these helpful tips:

  • Multiply the horizontal length of your screen by 2 and 5 — the 2x multiplier is the minimum screen distance for your seating and the 5x multiplier is the maximum distance. This allows you to estimate how many rows you'll be able to place in the space you have available.
  • Leave 20" between each row (front and back) and another 20" on each side of the room for walking space. Don't forget to keep reclining space in mind!
  • Divide the width of your room by the width of your seats to get the total number of seats that you can comfortably fit per row.

Consider Room Ratios

Creating exceptional sound in a smaller space can be a challenge, especially if your room has "bad ratios" for sound waves. A room that's a near-perfect cube is extremely difficult to wire for sound, as is a room that the Length x Width x Height are all multiples of each other. For instance, a room that is 20 feet long, 20 feet wide and 10 feet high would be challenging, while a room that is 22.5 x 13.5 x 9 would provide you with optimal acoustics. Some experts believe that the ideal size for a room would be multiples of 8 feet tall x 12 feet wide x 20 feet deep.
