It's fun to take an expensive new toy out of the box, but not everything has to be pricey. You can hear the difference when you spend the extra money on your speakers, but some things don't need to be top of the line, they just need to be good enough. A Blu-Ray player, for instance, is one piece of equipment that doesn't need to be top of the line. It's hard to tell the difference, if there is any difference in the first place, between a three hundred dollar player and a three thousand dollar player. It's just reading digital information off of a disc and sending it into your entertainment system.
Getting What You Pay For
A lot of us who are serious about our entertainment systems tend to turn our nose up at "affordable" products. If it's affordable, how good can it be, right? Well, the answer is, sometimes, "pretty good." As is the case with the Sony UBP-X700 4K. The player sells for under three hundred dollars, has all the features you're going to need, and plays your movies with the best picture quality you're going to get in any price range.
One of our favorite features is the dual HDMI outputs; this provides you with A/V separation as well as giving you crystal-clear sound. The unit also has some pretty decent upscaling to it, though, let's be honest, if you buy a 4K player, you're probably picking up some 4K discs to go with it. You could probably play movies burned onto CD's on this thing if you wanted to, but, ultimately, the choice is yours what type of discs you use.
How Does it Fit Into Your System?
Obviously, it's an electronic device, not home décor, but we all like when our system is nice to look at. The sleek black appearance Sony is known for makes it very easy on the eyes, and the compact build means that it fits just about anywhere. You won't be rearranging half of your living room just to fit the UBP-X700 onto a shelf somewhere; you can just pop it right under the TV. You might even have some room to spare if your previous player was a little on the bulky side.
As for whether we would recommend it as your all-in-one media player? Well, it can pull that off with the UBP-X700 if you like, it can be the centerpiece of a full system, but we'd recommend using it primarily to watch Blu-Ray discs. And we do recommend it for playing Blu-Ray discs. You're not going to find a better unit in any price range.
